First designed and manufactured in Massachusetts, the Rolls -Royce is usually known as an American automobile. However, from 1921 to 1935, the Rolls Royce was manufactured in England as well. The first Rolls Royce, Silver Ghost was priced in the USA around $11,000, an enormous sum for those days! As the Bentley is known for style, speed and grace, Rolls Royce is well known for quality of design and luxurious features. The Rolls Royce Company goes back over 100 years. It began as a small company in 1884, under the leadership of Frederick Henry Royce. The first "Royce” made its debut in 1904. During this time, Mr. Royce met Charles Stewart Rolls, and a deal was made between the two men to manufacture an auto that has the reputation of being one of the most prestigious automobiles in the world. As noted, the Silver Ghost was manufactured in England and in Massachusetts. In all, approximately 700 Sliver Ghost were produced.

During the early 1930s, Rolls Royce purchased Bentley, which was struggling because of the Depression. For years, the Rolls and the Bentley had similar qualities and looked very much alike. In 2002, minor changes were made. Shortly thereafter, Rolls Royce opted for a change to its radiator badges from red to black to be more copasetic with the colour of the coachwork. In 1959, Rolls Royce introduced the Phantom Mark IV, which altered the external build of its coachwork.

Part of Rolls Royce history includes providing aeronautical engines for the military in Britain. During the 1920s, this was a huge part of Rolls Royce’s business. The last design created by Royce was the Merlin that provided power to an extensive number of Britain’s WWII military planes.

Rolls Royce has made major contributions to engineering efforts throughout the 20th century, including cross channel hovercrafts and the recognizable Concorde. Although the Rolls Royce aircraft wing of the company underwent some financial problems during the 1970s, it endured and has enjoyed national recognition for many years.

The Rolls Royce automobile industry remains steadfast as a status of wealth and the absolute ultimate in its motor design. It has survived on its strength in designing one of the ultimate in luxury automobiles and is expected to do so for many years to come.
